Ottawa introduced new instructions for Study Permits

On November 16, 2021, the Government of Canada published a program delivery update for study permits.

New instructions reflect changes regarding the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). As of now, the list of the PGWP-eligible programs and institutions has been updated.

Prospective students planning to apply for a post-secondary degree in Canada are advised to check the list before applying.

In addition to these changes, the Government made clarities for on-campus employment eligibility as well as to the definition of off-campus work.

Is Express Entry pausing invitations to Canadian Experience Class applicants?

Recently, IRCC has reduced the frequency and scale of Express Entry invitations for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates.

The last CEC-specific round took place on September 14, 2021. Since then, IRCC held 5 PNP-specific rounds. As of now, the government has invited 112,040 Express Entry candidates in Express Entry and 99,653 of them were invited under the CEC.

Since the beginning of 2021, there were no invitations for the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates. The community of immigration experts hopes the all-program draws may renew in the new year.

Employers in Quebec will hire overseas candidates more easily

The Government of Quebec made it easy for employers to hire overseas candidates with high-demand occupations under the province’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

The province simplified work permit processing exempted employers from posting and recruitment efforts, as well as increased the share of temporary foreign workers per workplace by 10% to 20%.

This policy will allow the province to address severe labour shortages in Quebec’s major in-demand occupations, especially in the sectors such as retail trade, accommodation, catering, and food processing.

Canada will launch a pilot program to accept North Korean refugees

Canada will launch a pilot program to accept North Korean refugees

According to a Toronto-based human rights organization HanVoice, Canadians will be able to sponsor people fleeing North Korea under a new program that will be launched in February 2022.

The program will focus on bringing women and children fleeing North Korea and help refugees escaping the country’s authoritarian regime to start a new life in Canada. Currently, the US and South Korea are the only countries accepting refugees from North Korea.

Canada will prioritize bringing more families of North Korean women and children who have survived sexual and gender-based violence, or those who are at risk.
