The Liberal Government plans to expedite the deportation of rejected asylum seekers by amending Canada’s asylum system, as announced in the 2024 federal budget.
Amid a 62% rise in asylum applications since 2023, new measures aim to enhance efficiency without compromising fairness, despite concerns from immigration lawyers.
The backlog of 186,000 cases, partially due to Canada’s housing crisis, has resulted in longer wait times and 28,000 active warrants for failed applicants.
The government has dedicated $743.5 million to address the issue and introduced changes, including visa requirements for Mexicans, a cap on international students, and reduced work hours for them.

On April 29, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that the temporary policy allowing students to work over 20 hours off campus weekly will end on April 30, 2024, without extension.
From this fall, students can work 24 hours off campus weekly.
This ensures students focus on their studies while having work options as needed.
During academic breaks, students can work unlimited hours.
This change, developed considering student needs, other countries' policies, and research on academic outcomes, strikes a balance between work and study.

According to the last update, there were 2,212,000 applications for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship approvals in all IRCC inventories.
According to the update, 40.3% of applications in the inventory exceeded service standards. IRCC aims to process 80% of applications within their service standard, though some complex cases may require a comprehensive assessment.
Currently, 45% of temporary residence requests - including ones for visiting, studying, or working abroad and 41% of permanent residency applications are in backlog. Additionally, 18% of citizenship applications also exceed service standards.

In Manitoba, workers and students aiming for Permanent Resident status through the MPNP program are growing frustrated. Changes in Canada's immigration landscape have cast uncertainty on their prospects.
Despite past promises, the government isn't obligated to grant status in 2024. IRCC granted 9,500 nomination certificates to the province this year, with 20,000 to 27,000 expressions of interest (EOI) in the MPNP pool. Manitoba hosts over 47,000 individuals with temporary status.
To streamline processes, MPNP is expanding its team and budget, prioritizing applicants with expiring work permits (PGWP or CUAET) and showing flexibility to Ukrainian applicants encountering document hurdles. The province advises using the Skilled Worker Webform for Work Permit Support Letters but can't provide provisional ones due to IRCC Regulations.
Additionally, Mabitoba acknowledges the possibility of applicants needing to leave Canada temporarily during the application procedure.
