International students still struggle to get permanent residency

According to the recent report share by Statistics Canada, in the past 20 years, the number of international students in Canada has increased by five times. While the number of international students status transitioning to permanent residency is expected to become higher, there are still as many as 70% of international students that are unable to obtain PR status despite Canada’s favourable immigration policies released during the pandemic. According to data, international students under the age of 17 (25%) had a lower success rate in obtaining a PR, while older students have a higher success rate, but a lower success rate obtaining a study permit. Canada updated instructions for Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

On July 28, 2021, the Government of Canada updated instructions for students graduating outside of Canada for application for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). According to the new instructions, students who graduate outside of Canada are not required to hold or have held a valid study permit within 180 days of applying for the post-graduation work permit. Canada announced bridging work permit for TR2PR applicants

On July 26, 2021, the Government of Canada updated the public policy regarding open work permits for applicants under the temporary resident to permanent resident (TR2PR) pathway. Now, applicants who have applied for the TR2PR pathway as well as their family members can apply for open work permits. Eligible applicants must be physically present in Canada and authorized to work at the time of application for PR. Bridging work permit for TR2PR applicants to be announced on July 26

IRCC announced a new Open Work Permit for international student graduates, essential workers and medical workers. Starting on July 26, temporary residents who have successfully applied for the new May 6 immigration policy will be eligible to apply for a new open work permit to legally stay in Canada while waiting for their application decision. Without this new open work permit, applicants under the new policy would have to leave Canada if their current temporary status expires, even if they have already applied for PR.
