Canada introduced a new open work permit for recent permanent residency applicants

On July 15, 2021.

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Marco Mendicino announced that starting from July 26, 2021, applicants of the recently opened pathway to permanent residence will be eligible for an open work permit while awaiting the results of their application.

The new pathway to permanent residence was opened for 90,000 essential workers and international students who graduated from a Canadian institution on May 6, 2021.

Applications for the new work permit will be accepted online.

Additional details about the application process will be added to IRCC’s website on July 26, 2021.

Open work permits issued under this policy will be valid until December 31, 2022.

Minister Mendicino and FCFA President Roy invited French-speaking temporary residents to apply for PR

On July 12, 2021, Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Liane Roy, President of the Federation des communautes francophones et acadienne, called French-speaking temporary residents in Canada to take advantage of the recently launched temporary pathway to permanent residence (PR). IRCC will accept applications from French-speaking or bilingual candidates who intend to live outside of Quebec, under three streams. To support Canada’s objectives for Francophone immigration, these streams for French-speaking or bilingual candidates have no limit to the number of applications that can be received. Canada added seven countries to the Student Direct Stream

On July 9, 2021, the Government of Canada added seven new countries to the Student Direct Stream (SDS). Now, applicants of Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as Trinidad and Tobago can also apply to study in Canada under the SDS. The SDS was launched in 2018, allowing students from China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Senegal and Morocco to get a study permit within only 20 days. To be eligible for SDS, applicants must have a letter of acceptance from a post-secondary Canadian Designated Learning Institution, proof of full payment for the first academic year, meet the language requirement of CLB 7 or higher in each band, show a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of $10,000 CAD, pass the medical exam, and submit a police certificate in their application. Canada updated the Oath of Citizenship instructions

On July 8, 2021, Canada updated instructions for the Oath of Citizenship. The Government added a link to the updated Oath of Citizenship, which now refers to Aboriginal and treaty rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Accessibility information for persons who are unable to sign the Oath of Citizenship form is also provided. In addition, according to the new regulations, for applicants who have been granted citizenship and located outside of Canada, the Oath of Citizenship is allowed to be administered by a foreign service officer.
