The Youth Mobility Agreement between Canada and Andorra came into force
On June 22, 2021, the Government of Canada updated instructions for International Experience Canada (IEC) Program. The Government signed a new Youth Mobility Agreement (YMA) with Andorra that came into effect on June 21, 2021. IEC applicants coming from this country under the Working Holiday Program can find eligibility requirements in the bilateral agreement. Currently, Canada has the IEC Program agreements with 36 countries and territories. These agreements are open to Canadian and foreign youth aged 18 to 35 and support Canada’s economic and cultural interests.

Canada’s new immigration pathways failed to provide bridging open work permits to migrant workers
Some migrant workers and their families who had worked through the pandemic and whose work permits expired,
stopped working while their applications are in process.
Typically,
applicants, whose work permits expire while their applications are being processed can receive a bridging open work permit (BOWP) that allows them to work
while the paperwork is done and ensures their employment.
However, this is not applicable with the new pathways launched in May that aimed to grant permanent residence to 90,000 migrant workers and international graduates.

Confirmation of Permanent Residence holders can already enter Canada
On June 21, 2021, the Government of Canada announced an allowance for foreign nationals who hold a valid Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) to travel to Canada.
Individuals whose COPR has expired should not travel to Canada until they get a new COPR from Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). A COPR’s validity lasts for up to one year.
Since many applicants could not travel to Canada before their COPRs expired due to the travel restrictions,
IRCC will reissue them a new valid COPR. There are around 23,000 COPR holders who have not been able to travel to Canada since March 2020,
when the government of Canada imposed travel restrictions.

Canada will welcome more refugees in 2021
On June 18, 2021, the Government of Canada announced 3 new initiatives to offer asylum to more people, welcome more refugees through new channels, and support them through community sponsorship.
Refugee claimants can apply for asylum through Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program, and Protected persons Canada pathways. In 2021, almost 17,900 protected persons received permanent residency in Canada.
This year, the Government increased the quota for protected persons from 23,500 to 45,000, which allows the country to welcome more asylum seekers.
