Some francophone immigrants leave Quebec for other provinces
Some francophone immigrants leave Quebec to settle in other provinces as a result of application processing delays.
They choose to take advantage of the new immigration pathways launched by Ottawa that allow up French-speaking essential workers and international students to settle in provinces other than Quebec.
Instead of waiting over three years to be accepted as a permanent resident, as is the case of Quebec, French-speaking immigrants eligible for the federal program only have to wait six months to be
accepted into the new pathways.
Currently, more than 51,000 applicants are awaiting permanent residency in Quebec.

Canada’s affordability attracts immigrant entrepreneurs through the Start-Up Visa program
Canadian cities are more affordable than many other metropolises of the world, according to an annual survey conducted by an American asset management firm.
The most expensive Canadian city – Vancouver, is ranked 93rd in the Mercer 2021 Cost of Living City Ranking report, making Canada one of the most prosperous and affordable countries.
Other Canadian cities listed in the ranking are Toronto ranked 98th, Montreal 129th, Calgary 145th, and Ottawa 156th.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, companies throughout the world were looking for opportunities to replace traditional long-term assignments with alternative, less costly forms of mobility.
Canada’s Start-Up Visa program with more reasonable requirements attracts more and more foreign entrepreneurs every year.

Canadians are happy with the current immigration levels
According to the recent Angus Reid poll, almost half of Canadians support the Government’s plan to increase immigration and want to see even higher numbers of immigrants to help deal with the economic recovery from COVID-19.
34% of responders were happy with the current immigration strategy, while 13% wanted to see a greater increase. For 39% of responders, the level of immigration was too high, and 14% were not sure.
Due to the pandemic, immigration to Canada has declined.
In 2020, just 184,370 new permanent residents arrived in Canada, the lowest number since 1997.

Canadian citizens born outside Canada struggle to pass Canadian citizenship to their children born abroad
Transfer of citizenship to foreign-born Canadians became impossible for Canadian citizens who were born outside Canada.
The problem that faces many Canadians nowadays, began in 2009 when the government passed an amendment that prevented Canadian citizens who were themselves not born in Canada from passing on their citizenship to children also not born in Canada.
This limited access to naturalized citizenship and privileged Canadians without dual citizenship.
In addition, Bill C-24 came into effect in 2015, allowed the government to strip dual-citizen Canadians of their nationality should they be found guilty of terrorism,
fraud, treason, or serving in a foreign army. The act has not been applied to citizens born in Canada. Critics call the government to change this legislation.
