Canadian restaurant owners demand Ottawa ease the process of hiring foreign workers

Since from August 9, fully vaccinated non-essential travellers from the United States were allowed to travel Canada without quarantine requirements,

potential clientele for businesses in tourist areas substantially expanded.

Restaurateurs facing extreme labour shortages, want the Government to make it easier to hire immigrants and foreign workers.

Todd Barclay, president and chief executive officer of the industry association Restaurants Canada, said that ‘restaurants are key to bringing Canadians back to work, but precarious conditions over the past 18-plus months have created unprecedented hiring challenges.’

Canada modified instructions for COVID-19 travel restrictions

On September 9, 2021, the Government of Canada updated instructions to align with Phase 3 of the Border Reopening plan that came into force on September 7, 2021.

New measures include keeping the existing travel restrictions for entry and allowing discretionary travel from foreign nationals who meet the fully vaccinated exemption.

These instructions will help process temporary resident visas for immediate family members of temporary residents and for extended family members of Canadian citizens, persons registered as Indians under the Indian Act, and permanent residents.

For these travellers, the 3-night hotel stopover requirement has been removed and the reference to quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated foreign nationals has been adjusted.

The Green Party of Canada promised to ease immigration

The Green Party of Canada released an election platform where the Party promised to bring more skilled workers, better family reunification strategies, and address racism and inequalities within the existing systems.

If elected, the Canadian Greens will update the citizenship guidebook, terminate the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States, remove the visa requirement for most parents visiting children in Canada, address xenophobia, reduce barriers, and waive immigration fees for people below a certain income.

The Green Government also promised to ease the permanent residency pathway for essential workers, and improve conditions for refugees and asylum seekers.
