In 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has effectively managed the Canadian immigration system in response to the pandemic and reached its target of 401,000 new permanent residents.
IRCC also launched six temporary resident to permanent resident pathways, allowing those already in the country to obtain permanent residency.
In addition, since the Government focused on applicants who were within Canada, work and study permit holders consisted of the majority of applicants.
However, despite the developments in the system, processing times have been increased, with an estimated 1.8 million applications.

According to the Express Entry Year-End Report 2020, which was published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on December 13, 2021,
many immigrants admitted to Canada through the Express Entry system settle in Ontario. Approximately 60 percent of all immigrants admitted through Express Entry in 2020 settled in Ontario.
Many newcomers start their lives in the Greater Toronto Area, as well as the capital city of Ottawa. British Columbia and Alberta were respectively the second and third popular destinations for immigrants.

From 2016 to 2020 Express Entry candidates in certain tech occupations have received the highest number of invitations to apply (ITA).
The following three occupations in the tech sector were the most popular ones among the applicants: software engineers and designers (NOC 2173);
information systems analysts and consultants (NOC 2171);
and computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174).
There was significant variation in terms of gender balance since the majority of ITAs were issued to men.
Out of 6,665 invitations issued, male software engineers and designers received 5,000 ITAs.

On December 8, 2021, the Federal Court of Canada found out that a Refugee Protection Division member who has been working from 2010 to 2012 in the Executive Branch of the Hong Kong special administrative region,
demonstrated a reasonable apprehension of bias in hearing the refugee claim of a Hong Kong Umbrella Movement participant.
The applicant’s application rejected by the Refugee Appeal Division (RAD) member will be sent back to the RAD to be processed and determined by a different member.
