On January 1, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued a statement regarding the 75th anniversary of the first Canadian Citizenship Act, a major moment in Canada’s history.

Service Canada has experienced unforeseen technical issues after updating the system to modernize and improve the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) processing.
As a result, applicants may experience longer processing times as well as longer waiting times for requests such as name additions or changes.
Applicants who have already submitted their requests are asked to not submit new requests to avoid duplication and further delays.
Service Canada strongly recommends applicants submit their applications online and is working hard to minimize the impact this has and resolve issues in a timely manner.

India, China, and the Philippines were the most important source countries for Canadian immigration.
Unlike China and the Philippines, Canada accepted more immigrants than expected from India.
Out of 401,000 new permanent residents, almost one-fourth – 96,660 were from India. In addition, Nigeria, France, the United States, Brazil, Iran, Pakistan, and South Korea were the other biggest sources of newcomers to Canada this year.
The most popular way for foreign candidates to immigrate to Canada was through economic immigration programs. Around 63 percent of immigrants preferred to immigrate through them.

In 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has effectively managed the Canadian immigration system in response to the pandemic and reached its target of 401,000 new permanent residents.
IRCC also launched six temporary resident to permanent resident pathways, allowing those already in the country to obtain permanent residency.
In addition, since the Government focused on applicants who were within Canada, work and study permit holders consisted of the majority of applicants.
However, despite the developments in the system, processing times have been increased, with an estimated 1.8 million applications.
