Ottawa now accepts the Pearson Test of English for Canadian immigration

From January 30, 2024, all immigration pathways, aside from the Student Direct Stream (SDS), will accept the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core test.

This includes Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates, those in Express Entry managed programs, and individuals needing a language test for Canadian immigration or citizenship (excluding SDS).

The PTE Core is a two-hour computer-based language test assessing everyday English skills in speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.

The PTE Core replaces the PTE Essential test, and candidates should ensure they take the correct test for their program.

The arrival rate for spousal sponsorships is set to increase in 2023

Spousal sponsorship arrivals in Canada decreased by 14.8% in November, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data.

After an 8.7% rebound in October with 5,155 new permanent residents, the numbers fell to 4,390 in November. Despite this, Canada was still predicted to see a 17.6% increase in spousal sponsorships for 2023, with 75,458 new permanent residents compared to 64,145 in 2022.

Ontario recorded the highest number of arrivals under this program, with 36,905 spouses settling there in the first 11 months of the year.

Canada evaluates potential visa requirement for Mexicans

The Government of Canada may impose visas or other measures on Mexicans to curb refugee arrivals. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated this could prevent asylum claims via indirect access from Mexico.

The move follows Quebec Premier François Legault's letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressing Quebec's inability to accommodate more refugees and requesting compensation.

The absence of a visa requirement for Mexicans has reportedly contributed to the influx. The elimination of the Canadian visa requirement for Mexicans led to an increase in arrests in the US, suggesting a potential incentive for illegal immigration via Canada.

US Customs and Border Protection data showed a spike in migrants from Canada post-visa requirement removal.

Minister urged to address international student ‘no shows’

Established in 2014, the International Student Compliance Regime is designed to pinpoint illegitimate students and dubious institutions.

According to the IRCC's 2021 Student Integrity Analysis Report, certain colleges reported up to a 90% rate of "no-shows." The majority of these non-compliant colleges are privately owned, based in Ontario, and host a large population of students from India who, despite their acceptance, are not attending classes.

The Academy of Learning College in Toronto reported a non-compliance rate of 95%, with a 90% "no show" rate, while the Flair College of Management and Technology had a 75% "no show" rate.
