New research by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) identifies optimism about the future and a sense of belonging as the primary factors influencing immigrants' decisions to remain in Canada.

According to the "Here to Stay" report, which surveyed nearly 5,000 immigrants, a 1% increase in future optimism boosts retention likelihood by 28%, while an increased sense of belonging adds 25%.

Despite housing affordability concerns, these emotional connections prove more decisive for retention than economic factors. The findings come at a critical time as Canada faces declining birth rates and rising immigrant departures, offering policymakers clear direction for more effective retention strategies.
