According to a recent Nanos poll, most Canadians (53%) believe the government's plan to accept 465,000 new permanent residents is too high.
This is a significant shift from a few months ago when only 34% of Canadians thought immigration was too high. Canada has traditionally been pro-immigration, but there seems to be a changing sentiment due to the recent increase in immigration levels.
In 2014, Canada welcomed 260,404 new permanent residents, which was considered high.
However, last year, immigration reached 437,180, and when accounting for non-permanent immigration, the Canadian population increased by over one million.
This represents a 2.7% annual rise in population, offsetting any per-capita benefits from Canada's GDP growth.

The House of Commons will debate Canada's economic growth strategy on September 18, 2023. Canada's real GDP per capita growth has been anemic at 0.5% annually over the past five years and is the fifth weakest among 38 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.
Canada's per capita GDP growth has been negative over the past year. Real incomes are lower than before the pandemic, with a $1,200 drop in income per person or a $2,830 drop per household compared to 2019.
Canada is not expected to recover its 2019 income per capita until at least 2027.
The OECD forecasts that Canada will have the lowest real GDP per capita growth and will be the worst-performing advanced economy over 2020-2030 and 2030-2060.

According to a recent report by Statistics Canada, the number of racialized people in Canada increased by 130% from 2001 to 2021 due to immigration.
The study analyzed data from population censuses and found that the number of racialized people increased much faster than the white population, which only grew by one percent.
This has led to a more diverse Canadian population, with one in four people in Canada being from a racialized population in 2021.
Before 1981, racialized people accounted for less than five percent of the population due to immigration policies. However, policy changes led to a shift in Canada's demographic composition.
The study also found that smaller groups within the racialized population have increased their population share in recent years.

Manitoba is developing a plan to increase economic immigration through its new Advisory Council on Economic Immigration and Settlement (ACEIS).
The province is focused on addressing labour shortages, encouraging economic development, and supporting its francophone population.
The Council recommended a strategy to attract more immigrants and business investors, streamline the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, and improve newcomer retention.
Manitoba has already taken steps to meet these goals, including requesting additional MPNP allocations, conducting targeted EOI draws, and doubling the investment in the Newcomer Community Integration Support Program.
The ACEIS vice-chair is committed to implementing the Council's recommendations and targeting labour market shortages in Manitoba.
The province is confident its efforts will contribute to economic growth through immigration.
