The Government of Canada supports research into Francophone immigration

On November 8, 2023, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Marc Miller, announced a $85,000 grant for the Université de l’Ontario français to support the Observatoire en immigration francophone au Canada.

This initiative will establish an oversight committee to define the observatory's mission and governance, address Francophone immigration research concerns, and guide the Government of Canada's efforts in this area.

A portion of the funds will go towards a survey on Francophone immigration research needs in Canada. This endeavour underscores Canada's commitment to promoting Francophone immigration outside Quebec, enriching cultural and linguistic diversity, and bolstering local economies.

Canada prolonged special temporary measures for Sudanese applicants

The Government of Canada has extended temporary measures for Sudanese nationals in Canada until October 27, 2024.

This allows them to extend their stay or change their status as visitors, students, or temporary workers free of charge due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The conflict has claimed over 9,000 lives and displaced 5.6 million people.

The measures prioritize the processing of temporary and permanent residence applications for those in Sudan. Applicants with ongoing applications do not need to reapply.

Quebec will not increase the immigration levels

Despite business appeals for increased immigration, Quebec will maintain its 50,000 levels for 2024 and 2025.

In addition, Premier Francois Legault announced new rules, including a French test for some Temporary Foreign Workers to renew their work permits.

He emphasized the importance of French for long-term immigration.

Lower immigration levels are maintained despite labour shortages, a falling birth rate, and an aging population, as Legault cites difficulties integrating higher numbers.

The government believes an influx of non-French-speaking immigrants is causing a language decline.

Saskatchewan expands the SINP to include 279 new jobs

On November 1, 2023, the Government of Saskatchewan announced broadening the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) to bolster worker retention. The expansion now allows certain work permit holders in intermediate and lower-skilled occupations to apply for permanent residency under the Existing Work Permit stream. This change opens up PR opportunities for internationally trained workers in these sectors who meet the program's criteria, including language requirements and a full-time job offer. Previously, only high-skilled and designated trade workers were eligible for this program. Now, an additional 279 occupations, such as farm labourers, truck drivers, retail sales, nurse aides, and equipment operators, can apply. To qualify for the expanded stream, applicants must hold an eligible work permit, a Labor Market Impact Assessment-Supported Work Permit, a Francophone mobility work permit, or a CUAET visa for recently arrived Ukrainians. #Saskatchewan, #SINP, #Immigration_to_Canada, #Ukrainian_immigrants, #CUAET, #work_permits, #work_in_Canada, #PR https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/saskatchewan-makes-279-more-jobs-eligible-for-immigrant-nominee-program/ar-AA1jeyM5 https://saskatoon.ctvnews.ca/sask-expands-immigrant-nominee-program-to-fill-lower-skilled-jobs-1.6627418
