The Ontario Government plans to amend the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) to increase eligibility for international students.
The proposed legislation focuses on revising requirements for those in one-year college graduate certificate programs, with over 900 such programs across the province.
This offers international students who previously considered moving to other provinces a better chance for permanent residency.
The changes, possibly approved next week and implemented early next year, also ban Canadian work experience as a job prerequisite, facilitating more qualified candidates to progress in the interview process.

The Canadian Centre to End Human Traffic and Covenant House Vancouver praised Ottawa's new immigration strategy but criticized its failure to fully address human trafficking and exploitation of newcomers and migrant workers.
Both organizations identified gaps in the system last year and commended the Government for including many of their suggestions.
However, they expressed disappointment with the omission of critical actions like open work permits, family reunification, and a permanent residency pathway for low-wage migrant workers and urged immediate implementation of these measures.

On November 8, 2023, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Marc Miller, announced a $85,000 grant for the Université de l’Ontario français to support the Observatoire en immigration francophone au Canada.
This initiative will establish an oversight committee to define the observatory's mission and governance, address Francophone immigration research concerns, and guide the Government of Canada's efforts in this area.
A portion of the funds will go towards a survey on Francophone immigration research needs in Canada. This endeavour underscores Canada's commitment to promoting Francophone immigration outside Quebec, enriching cultural and linguistic diversity, and bolstering local economies.

The Government of Canada has extended temporary measures for Sudanese nationals in Canada until October 27, 2024.
This allows them to extend their stay or change their status as visitors, students, or temporary workers free of charge due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The conflict has claimed over 9,000 lives and displaced 5.6 million people.
The measures prioritize the processing of temporary and permanent residence applications for those in Sudan. Applicants with ongoing applications do not need to reapply.
