Two Afghan Canadians who served in the Canadian military in Afghanistan are taking legal action against the Federal Government due to alleged discrimination in immigration policies.
The plaintiffs assert that the government affords superior immigration benefits to Ukrainians than to Afghans.
Expressly, the policy for Afghan language and culture advisers permits their immediate family members, such as sisters, to immigrate to Canada, but not their adult children.
The legal team representing the advisers has indicated that they seek to expand the Ukrainian policy to include anyone facing similar circumstances of wartime persecution or gross human rights violations, not just Ukrainians.

On June 2, 2023, Newfoundland and Labrador made it easier for internationally-trained nurses to work in the province by amending the Registered Nurses Regulations.
The changes include establishing a Designated Countries Pathway for nurses from seven countries, including the US, UK, India, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, and reducing costs and education assessment time for International Nursing Applicants.
The Provincial Government plans to welcome approximately 200-300 nurses from India by the end of this year. Currently, there are already 200 internationally-educated nurses working in the province.

The government of New Brunswick will cover costs for up to 300 internationally educated nurses each year to help them integrate into the healthcare system.
The initiative will last five years and cover various expenses such as assessments and tuition. Eligible nurses will be provided with financial support on a case-by-case basis.
Candidates must have a provincial nomination, be licensed in their home country, and pursue the licensure/registration process in New Brunswick to be eligible.
As part of this initiative, the Nurses Association of New Brunswick has taken steps to reduce the registration process for nurses from 12-18 months to as little as two weeks.
