Canada’s farming sector fears labour shortages due to cuts in temporary foreign workers

Canada's farming sector is concerned about the federal government's plans to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers (TFWs), which could significantly impact the industry due to its heavy reliance on these workers.

The decision to lower the share of temporary residents to five percent of the total population over the next three years has been criticized for unfairly categorizing TFWs with international students.

Reducing up to 600,000 TFWs over the next three years, aimed at reducing demand on Canada's limited housing supply, is expected to impact agricultural workers directly.

NBPNP temporarily halted the New Brunswick Skilled Worker Stream

The New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP) has temporarily paused the New Brunswick Skilled Worker stream for any Expression of Interest (EOI) submitted after May 17th, 2024.

This pause is necessary for the province to manage this stream's high volume of candidates.

The NBPNP recommended that foreign nationals and employers with jobs or job offers in NOC TEERs 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 consider the Atlantic Immigration Program as an alternative.

Invitations will still be issued to all eligible French-speaking candidates, as evidenced by TEF or TCF language test results, meeting the NCLC 4 proficiency level in all four language competencies, and with a qualifying job or job offer in a TEER 0,1,2,3 or 4 position.

The NBPNP Skilled Worker stream will still accept EOIs, which could lead to an invitation when the program reopens.

Canada extended immigration measures to support relatives of Canadian citizens and residents who left Sudan

On May 16, 2024,  the Government of Canada extended immigration measures to help immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who left Sudan.

These measures, valid until October 27, 2024, were implemented following the violence that broke out on April 15, 2023.

With these measures, qualifying relatives from abroad can receive a fee-exempt temporary resident permit (TRP) to ease their journey to Canada.

Upon arrival in Canada, they can apply for a fee-exempt open work or study permit and even submit a fee-exempt application for permanent residence under the family class.

International students in Canada struggle to meet labour market demands

Canada's international student intake does not align with labour market needs, with most focusing on business-related programs.

Only a small percentage pursue health sciences, medicine, or trade and vocational programs. This mismatch is blamed on a lack of oversight and contributes to negative economic outcomes.

Experts argue that immigration policies focus more on immigrant outcomes and long-term market needs.

The Federal Government aims to reduce the number of new study permits, considering only a specific number of study permit applications in 2024 due to concerns about the integrity of the international student system.
