Canadian employment held steady in October

Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for October 2021 showed that employment held steady and the unemployment rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points to 6.7%.

Despite the number of employed people working less than half their usual hours is still 117,000 higher (+14.5%) than in February 2020, the amount fell by 9.7% (-100,000) in October.

In addition, due to the cancellation of the capacity limits in the sectors where proof of vaccination is mandatory, employment experienced a rise in Ontario and New Brunswick, while having a downward trend in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Canada is among the top countries for investment

According to the 2021 Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index (NBI), Canada is one of the top countries in the world for its immigration practices and investment climate.

During the last few years, Canada went up to second place in the NBI’s overall rankings in the survey of 60 nations.

The report by Ipsos states that it is the first time that Canada has moved up to the second place.

“First place rankings on the governance, people, and immigration and investment indices, as well as relatively steady rankings on exports, tourism, and culture contributed to Canada’s record ranking in 2021.”

Agricultural workers denounce abuse and flee farms

Four Mexican and Guatemalan agricultural workers returned to their countries of origin on September 25, saying they were exhausted from the living and working conditions at the farm in les Hautes-Laurentides.

Prior to their departure, other workers packed their bags and fled.

According to the director-general of the Quebec Workers and Agricultural Workers Support Network (RATTMAQ), to date, 11 workers have asked to leave and seven have fled.

The workers who denounced their conditions asked not to be identified out of fear of repercussions.
