The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons will fast-track the certification of healthcare professionals

In the wake of Canada's doctor shortage and criticism regarding their policies that discriminate against non-domestic medical graduates, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons is reforming its rules to make it simpler for international physicians to work in Canadian hospitals.

The college, an organization that establishes standards for medical specialists such as surgery, cardiology and emergency medicine, has come under tremendous pressure to find ways to more efficiently assess foreign-trained physicians and determine if they can take the certification exams.

Ottawa updated instructions for super visa applications

On January 12, 2023, the Government of Canada announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated instructions for the super visa applications.

According to the update, the Canadian Government revoked the policy of refusing medical insurance coverage for those paying in installments.

The immigration officers should be satisfied that the applicant has obtained sufficient and suitable coverage for their entire year of entry, regardless of payment method.

The policy change aims to improve access to the super visa and provide additional assistance for those seeking to visit their family in Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador to recruit physicians and nurses from Ireland

On January 9, 2023, Newfoundland and Labrador announced that the provincial government was preparing to recruit physicians and nurses from Ireland to fill vacancies in the province.

Ireland has been selected due to its physician training standards being comparable to those in Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the vast opportunity for recruiting nurses who are eligible for licensure.

The province's Ministry of Health and Community Services will send a team to Ireland to raise awareness of Newfoundland and Labrador as an ideal immigration destination.

The provincial government has made a substantial investment of $30 million to attract and retain healthcare professionals.

Canadians worry about the current immigration levels

Herbert Grubel, an immigrant to Canada and professor of economics at Simon Fraser University, argues that Canadians increasingly worry about the current immigration levels.

According to Grubel, almost half of the population believes that 500,000 immigrants per year are too much for Canada, and 75% of people are worried about potential housing shortages and the extra demand for social services due to this new plan.

In addition, despite many Canadians welcoming immigrants and appreciating their benefit to the economy, they believe the housing market in Canada can only absorb much higher prices.
