Ottawa introduced a new update for the Atlantic Immigration Program

On September 23, 2022, the Government of Canada introduced a new update for the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).

According to the new instructions, candidates who are already working in Canada do not need to show proof of funds.

Those who do not work but have a valid work permit must demonstrate that they have enough funds available for settlement in Canada at the time of application and when the application is finalized.

Depending on the applicant’s family size, candidates have to use 12.5% of the current low-income cut-off (LICO) for urban areas with populations of 500,000 or more.

IRCC is dealing with the immigration backlog

Last month, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC),

pointed out how Canada is taking measures to improve the immigration system by hiring 1,250 new employees within the next few months, streamlining IRCC operations, introducing application status trackers and publishing monthly data on the IRCC website.

According to IRCC's new webpage tracking the immigration backlog, there were 2.4 million applications in the inventory on July 31. Of those, 1.1 million were within service standards, and 1.3 million were in the backlog.

Activists are urging Trudeau to expand his plan for undocumented migrants

As the House of Commons resumes operations after the summer break, immigration advocates are pushing for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to establish a path to permanent residency for as many as 500,000 undocumented immigrants in Canada.

Since the spring, the minority Liberal government, aided by the New Democrats, has been quietly developing a so-called regularization plan for non-status migrants, many of whom are precariously employed in construction, cleaning, caregiving, food processing, and agriculture.

The range of vulnerabilities faced by people in the gig economy is concerning, advocates say.

Poor mental and physical health caused by social isolation and abusive working conditions were some of the main issues facing these workers.

The rise of unauthorized immigration consultants across Canada

There has been a tremendous increase in ‘Ghost' immigration consultants throughout Canada recently.

Unauthorized or unlicensed experts have been accused of having a physical office in many Canadian cities.

Illegal immigration and visa consultants are most common on social media, especially TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms.

Ghost consultants are individuals who pretend to provide immigration services to clients but do not have the required education or training.

They falsely represent themselves as immigration experts. They are not allowed to advocate for or apply for a client's immigration status.
