What are the main highlights of the new Immigration Levels Plan?

On November 1, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released the 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan.

The new plan focuses on economic growth, intending to increase admissions in the economic class by 2025.

Canada also will admit more immigrants through the Atlantic Immigration Program and the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot to address local labour market needs.

Other new plan highlights are increasing the share of Francophone immigration outside Quebec, reuniting more families faster, and providing a haven to refugees and asylum seekers.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe aims to increase immigration

Saskatchewan Prime Minister Scott Moe intends to convince the Canadian government to increase immigration to the province from 6,000 to 13,000 people annually.

To do this, he turned to the business community of Saskatchewan for help with a request from the Canadian authorities for a new immigration agreement between Canada and Saskatchewan.

Like most officials in Saskatchewan, Mo believes the province needs more immigration autonomy in the immigration process to meet economic needs and address labour shortages.

By 2030, the province plans to create another 100,000 jobs. The provincial government aims to make the SINP the primary source of immigrants, increasing Saskatchewan's population to 1.4 million by 2030.

Canada acknowledges racism within its immigration system and pledges to improve African international students’ experience

Systemic racism is present in Canada, and more must be done to end it. African students should not face unfair selection criteria when applying for study permits, but unfortunately, they often do.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) acknowledged the problems in response to a House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration report.

IRCC acknowledged there is racism in Canada along with within the organization itself and concurred that more needs to be done concerning racial bias and discrimination as it pertains to organizational policies, programs, functions, and processing.

IRCC improves advanced analytics to fasten the application process for visitor records

On October 12, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the expansion of advanced analytics and other automated technology.

IRCC's use of advanced analytics and automation is part of its commitment to leveraging technology responsibly to build a more robust immigration system.

The new tool will save time by automating clerical and repetitive tasks related to sorting applications so that IRCC officers can focus on assessing applications and making final decisions.

This will result in quicker client decisions and faster processing times overall for visitor record applications.
