Marc Miller, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), announced the extension of three temporary policies set to expire in 2023.
IRCC extended the waiver, allowing students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours weekly until April 30, 2024.
This applies to students already in Canada and those who apply for a study permit by December 7, 2023. Furthermore, the measure allowing online study time to count towards a post-graduation work permit will continue for students starting before September 1, 2024.
In addition, the Canadian Government extended the temporary policy granting an extra 18-month work permit for post-graduation work permit holders with expiring work permits.
Post-graduation work permit holders whose initial permit expires by December 31, 2023, can apply to extend their work permit.

Ahead of its expiration in February 2024, the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) has seen a surge in applications.
The city of Thunder Bay's Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), which oversees the Pilot, has experienced an overwhelming interest from immigrants seeking to settle in the region.
Despite having only 115 spots available for 2023 and 2024, over 200 applications were submitted within an hour of the portal opening on November 17, indicating a strong desire for economic immigration in the region.
The RNIP, launched three years ago to benefit smaller communities, has seen local applicants increase from 67 in 2020 to 475 in 2023, with an additional 100 spots allocated for 2024.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller affirms Canada's ability to reach a six percent francophone immigration target by next year, despite nearly two decades the Government worked to reach the previous 4.4 percent target.
The new aim is to boost francophone immigration outside Quebec to six percent in 2023, seven percent in 2025, and eight percent in 2026.
Miller emphasizes the need to monitor progress and apologizes for any missed targets. The new targets were set after consulting various organizations and considering previous successes.
However, with current socio-economic pressures, immigrants are often blamed for inflation and housing crises. Despite these challenges, Miller remains confident that the targets are achievable.
The 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan proposes to welcome 1.485 million new permanent residents over three years.

The Canadian Government released data on Express Entry candidates who most often have received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
The data, covering January to September 2023, showed 53,455 ITAs issued. Express Entry manages applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and part of the Provincial Nominee Program.
Factors considered included ITAs by program, province, score, age, and occupation.
Most successful were Canadian Experience Class applicants in their 20s, often software engineers planning to live in Ontario. By program, 45% of ITAs went to the CEC, 30% to FSWP, and 26% to the PNP.
Almost half of all ITA recipients planned to reside in Ontario, followed by British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia.
