CBSA charged an agent for immigration violations

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has charged Indian national Brijesh Mishra with immigration-related offences, including unauthorized representation or advice for consideration, counselling misrepresentation, misrepresentation (direct or indirect misrepresentation and communicating false information), and non-compliance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

The charges stem from an investigation initiated by CBSA after receiving information regarding Mr. Mishra’s status in Canada and his alleged involvement in fraudulent activities, including issuing fraudulent letters to Indian students on behalf of Canadian postsecondary institutions.

Immigration Minister announced a statement on World Refugee Day

On June 20, 2023, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Sean Fraser issued a statement on World Refugee Day, recognizing refugees' strength and courage.

Canada has a proud history of resettling vulnerable people, welcoming over 47,500 refugees from over 80 countries in 2022.

The Government of Canada remains committed to resettling between 72,000 and 76,000 refugees annually through various programs and provides economic immigration opportunities for skilled refugees through the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot.

Additionally, Canada works to improve conditions in countries like Venezuela and promotes quality education and lifelong learning for children and youth in conflict-affected areas through the Together for Learning campaign.

Canada published new data on immigration inventories and backlogs

On June 16, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the data on immigration inventories and backlogs.

According to the last update, there were 2,248,000 applications for permanent residence, temporary residence and citizenship approvals in all IRCC inventories.

According to the update, 36.4% of applications in the inventory exceeded service standards. IRCC aims to process 80% of applications within their service standard, though some complex cases may require a comprehensive assessment.

Currently, 33% of temporary residence requests - including ones for visiting, studying, or working abroad and 48% of permanent residency applications are in backlog. Additionally, 27% of citizenship applications are also exceeding service standards.

IRCC published important instructions for PGWP holders

On June 15, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a temporary policy allowing eligible post-graduation work permit (PGWP) holders to apply for an additional open work permit valid for up to 18 months.

All applications must be received between April 6 and December 31, 2023, and their PGWPs have expired or will be expired between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2023.

These instructions guide the issuance of the additional open work permit during the policy's effectivity period.
