Conservative Shadow Ministers Michelle Rempel Garner and Brad Redekopp have unveiled a comprehensive package of amendments to Bill C-12 that address what they describe as a failing immigration system.
The proposed reforms tackle mounting challenges, including a 30-fold increase in asylum backlogs since 2015, security screening concerns with hundreds of individuals linked to Hamas now in Canada, and over $3.3 billion in taxpayer costs for health benefits to claimants.
The amendments focus on ending federal benefits for failed claimants, barring asylum claims by G7 and EU nationals, closing legal loopholes that prevent the deportation of serious criminals, and modernizing the Immigration and Refugee Board through merit-based appointments.
