Internal statistics from Canada's immigration departments highlight a major shift in the country's humanitarian landscape, as new monthly refugee protection claims dropped to a two-year low of 2,640 in April 2026.

This represents a staggering reduction from the peak of nearly 20,000 claims recorded in July 2024. The sharp downward trend in intake has allowed the government to finally chip away at its massive inventory, lowering total pending cases to 293,075.

However, the legal system remains under immense strain downstream, as secondary refugee and immigration appeals continue to climb, pushing pending appellate workloads to record heights this spring.
