Canada should match labour market demands with the skills and qualifications of newcomers

Despite Canada's efforts to align labour market needs with economic migration, newcomers struggle to succeed in the job market.

Employment and Social Development Canada report shows that university-educated immigrants are overrepresented in low- and medium-skill sectors and underrepresented in high-skilled jobs.

If adjustments are not made in education and employer and cultural attitudes towards newcomers, there is a risk of repeating these patterns.

Currently, about half of the newcomers are economic migrants, and the goal is to increase this to 60% by 2025.
