Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed on September 15 that changes to visa rules are among the issues being discussed as Canada seeks deeper ties with the European Union.

The talks are part of a broader effort to develop what Carney has described as a “unique alliance” between Canada and the EU.

One possibility under discussion could make it easier for Canadians to live and work in EU countries without traditional visa restrictions, although no agreement has been reached.

Canada is not seeking EU membership or an existing European-style association arrangement.

Discussions also cover trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, defence and technology. Carney said the talks are still at an early stage, with further Canada-EU discussions expected in the coming months.
