On October 27, 2021, the Ministry of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that 116 refugees from Afghanistan arrived in St. John’s to begin a new life in a new country.
These refugees are mainly those who chose to stand up and work cooperatively with Canadian and NATO-led efforts to create security.
This group of Afghan refugees was directed to St. John’s by the Federal Government under the government-sponsored refugee program and is the first group of Afghans to land in Canada outside of Calgary or Toronto.
